Venba Revealed As Top 2024 Finalist Ahead of the Independent Games Festival

Excitement is building as the 26th annual Independent Games Festival (IGF), the longest running festival, summit and showcase celebrating independent games and their creators, draws near. This past Thursday, Informa Tech, the organizers of GDC, unveiled the finalists for the prestigious IGF Awards, with Visai Games’ cooking sensation, Venba, leading the pack with an impressive four nominations. This includes a nomination for the festival’s coveted Grand Prize.

Over 500 entries were meticulously assessed by a panel of expert jurors from across the gaming industry. The finalists were chosen after thorough review and discussion by category-specific juries.

Previous IGF prize winners include celebrated titles like Betrayal at Club Low, Neon White, TUNIC, and Night in the Woods.

Venba by Visai Games Takes the Spotlight

Venba is a heartwarming narrative cooking game that offers players a unique experience, stepping into the shoes of an Indian mother named Venba who immigrated to Canada in the 1980s. The cozy game delicately weaves together conversations and food to unfold the family’s tales of love and loss. With it’s overwhelmingly positive reviews, the new title by Visai Games has emerged as the front-runner with nominations in following categories: 

Excellence in Audio, Narrative, Visual Art, and the Seumas McNally Grand Prize. 

Fierce Competition Among Other Top 2024 Indie Game Nominees

Venba isn’t the only standout nominee in the realm of indie games. Joining the spotlight are five other diverse titles with three nominations each:

  • 1000xRESIST by Fellow Traveller
  • A Highland Song by Inkle
  • Anthology of the Killer by Thecatamites
  • COCOON by Annapurna Interactive
  • Mediterranea Inferno by Santa Ragione

All titles are also contenders for the prestigious Seumas McNally Award with it’s $30,000 (USD) Grand Prize.

The IGF Awards cover a range of categories, showcasing the diversity and creativity within the independent gaming industry. Save the Date: IGF Awards Ceremony takes place March 20, 2024

Winners for each category will be announced during the Independent Games Festival Awards ceremony on March 20, 2024, during the 2024 Game Developers Conference. The event will be held in-person at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco and will be broadcast simultaneously on GDC Twitch. 

Attendees with GDC 2024 passes can enjoy both the IGF Awards and the Game Developers Choice Awards.
