When it comes to TV couples, we all know who are largely considered the best.
Jim and Pam from The Office often make their way into this conversation as do Ross and Rachel from Friends. If we’re looking at dramas, Eric and Tammy Taylor from Friday Night Lights may come up as do Derek Shepherd and Meredith Grey from Grey’s Anatomy.
All these are great couples and there are many others that have us rooting for them, be they established couple or a will-they-won’t-they couple.
One couple, however, that doesn’t get brought up that I believe should originates from the dramedy Lucifer: Lucifer Morningstar and Chloe Decker.
These two are central to the plot of Lucifer and I will try my best to discuss the roller coaster I’ve had with them without spoilers.
I wouldn’t blame you for scoffing at the idea of the devil loving anyone else but himself and that’s exactly how Lucifer comes across. He acts selfish and hedonistic. The first episode shows he abandoned his post in Hell and fled to Los Angeles.
Chloe, on the other hand, is a straight-laced cop who is trying her best to make it in the world as a single mother. Her and Lucifer clash in almost every way and that’s what makes them such good partners.
As the show wears on, Lucifer and Chloe grow closer. Lucifer begins to realize that Chloe has a big impact on him and his powers as the devil. In short, she makes him vulnerable, both literally and emotionally.
He drops his guard and attempts to improve himself, well, as well as he can for being the devil. Their pairing proves to be too perfect and that ends up causing problems down the road.
Lucifer and Chloe are a classic will-they-won’t-they couple. Every time you see Lucifer start to embrace his feelings for the detective, something happens that causes Chloe to not reciprocate and vice versa.
Full disclosure: I am about halfway through the fifth season right now so I can’t speak to how their journey ends. That said, their relationship took center stage in the fourth and fifth seasons, making for some compelling interactions.
Yes, the cliché of buddy cops falling in love is overused. What makes this time a little more different is the wrinkle of one of those buddy cops being the devil.
It makes you question how a human can fall truly in love with the devil and not just fall for his seductions. This dynamic makes their interactions more than just the cliche buddy cops.
Lucifer, the show, explores Lucifer’s redemption and how being in Los Angeles changes him. In turn, it also explores the impact of having the mythical aspects of God, angels, and demons around in the everyday lives of mortals.
Not only do we explore exactly how someone can fall in love with the devil, but we see just what the means for Chloe. It’s a fascinating exploration and one that makes Lucifer a criminally (pun intended) underrated show.
