During PAX East, Whitethorn Games brought several of their upcoming games for fans to demo.
In addition, the team sat down to talk about their continuing commitment to making games more accessible to gamers at all levels.
Their goal is to make their games as accessible as possible for as many people as possible. In that effort, they have Britt Dye who works in-house and specializes in working with their developers to help them achieve this goal.
Dye, alongside a part-time assistant, is responsible for sitting down with developers later in the process to make sure that their vision stays intact but while removing any unintended barriers that may limit some of their audience.
What are unintended barriers?
Dye shared the example of having to hold a button down for an extended period of time. Some gamers may not have the strength or dexterity to complete this task, especially for something as simple as merely saving the game.
In order to make sure these barriers are absent from the game; she sits down with developers. She finds out what their goal for the game is, what they want others to feel throughout the process.
Then she and her assistant sit down, play the game, and review it for barriers.
Dye said that the first step to making your games more accessible may be intimidating. But that first step is the most important. The more people that can play your games are more people that can fall in love with your content.
She went on to share some resources that can help developers who may share a similar goal but are unsure where to start. One was the Games Accessibility Conference. Not only is there an event, there is a guide to help developers.
Additional resources are the X-Box accessibility guide and the family gaming database.
With Whitethorn’s extensive docket of upcoming games, Dye and her team stay busy. But the work they do makes a difference for their fans and for those who seek games that they can play.
