During day two of PAX East 2024, I had the chance to visit with the developers from Polished Games and to play Be My Horde, the latest in the Vampire Survivors genre.
Game Description
Polished Games explains Be My Horde as follows:
“In Be My Horde you assume the role of Moriana, a necromancer engaged in battles against forces of the living. Here, YOU are the embodiment of evil. Build your own army of undead soldiers by resurrecting fallen enemies. In this world, opponents are not mere obstacles—they are a resource! Expand your army, composed of hundreds of squalid warriors, and unleash chaos upon your foes.”
Gameplay
Like other games within the Vampire Survivors genre, the main objective is to survive by moving around and avoiding the many attacks from the mobs of enemies surrounding players. But unlike most of these games, players don’t need to manually do the fighting in Be My Horde; instead, your necromancy powers automatically raise an army of the undead to do the fighting for you. Players must then strategically move towards enemy types that will complement their current horde.
Enemy types:
- Priests: provide healing to the horde and Moriana.
- Sheep: essentially bombs with legs–and yes it’s as awesome as it sounds.
- Archers / Mages: planned as future content, these enemies will use ranged attacks.
- Bosses: planned as future content, bosses will possess unique abilities which the player can add to the horde.
The development team also mentioned that the full-release game will have a castle as the central hub where players can spend Souls to gain new abilities and to power up their horde. The single-player campaign will then revolve around a series of missions to expand Moriana’s influence.

Reactions to the Demo
I enjoyed this game a lot; I had no expectations going in, as I’m not big on this genre. That said, I found myself sucked in by the gameplay loop and felt disappointed when I eventually met my demise and the demo ended. The game is still very early in its developmental process (only ten months!), but the core concept is there, and it’s a good one.
Polished Games plans to release Be My Horde on Steam mid-summer with an “early access” version. They plan on a quick turnaround after that with a desire to publish the full game three to four months after the early access version.
