Physical video games are my kryptonite. Throw in some stickers, posters, pins, keychains, or even statues? Forget about it! Collector’s or Deluxe Editions of video games are fairly common options available for purchase, but once you empty your wallet, do you ever wonder if these are a waste of money?

I hate asking that question because I love collecting special editions of video games. These come in a variety of names and offerings, both digital and physical. Digital offerings include custom skins, OP weapons, early access, and/or additional levels or content. Physical offerings include accessories such as stickers and keychains–some are more enticing than others. Final Fantasy XVII: Rebirth‘s Collector’s Edition comes with a 19-inch statue of Sephiroth!

The price range varies with the content and accessories included, but generally, they are much pricier than the base game. For example, Horizon Forbidden West‘s Regalla Edition is $260 USD. It contains the following (and you tell me if it’s worth the money):
- digital copy of Horizon Forbidden West
- steel book
- Regalla-themed, custom sculpted Tremortusk and Aloy statue
- Replica Focus and custom stand
- two art print cards and mini art book
- Replica Sunwing and Clawstrider Machine Physical Strike pieces
- canvas map
- two Special Outfits and two special weapons
- in-game resources pack, Apex Clawstrider Machine Strike Piece
- exclusive photo mode poses and face paints
- digital soundtrack
- digital Version of The Sunhawk, the first Horizon Zero Dawn graphic novel
After pursuing Collector Editions for several games over time, I am starting to question myself about their worth. Do I love my collection? Absolutely! But…is it worth it? I’m not so sure anymore. What do I do with stickers, my 100th keychain, and art cards? Unless I have a massive game room with an ideal means to display them, most of my stuff are gingerly placed back in their packaging to collect dust.

Ultimately, what is considered a “waste of money” is up to the consumer. If you make good use of your special editions, then I would say, no, it’s not a waste. However, if your room is starting to look like a contender for the show Hoarders, maybe it’s time to funnel your finances elsewhere.
