Vindicated Entertainment’s new game is coming to Kickstarter on April 10th.
Truck-kun: An Isekai Board Game is the latest project from Vindicated Entertainment, a company that’s had several successes on Kickstarter already. With a number of card games, board games, and tabletop RPGs under their belt already, the company is in familiar territory. Their love of anime and JRPGs is easy to see, and the upcoming Truck-kun is a further extension of that.
In the game, players will compete to see who can get the most points by claiming different “Isekai,” a combination of a randomly drawn subject card and world card. They’re assigned a random value, and may have special properties of their own. Players each have a large hand of cards they can play to introduce some chaos and swing the game in their favor, and the first to 20 points wins. While designed to be competitive, there’s also a cooperative mode where the players compete against a singular boss.
The Isekai (literally translated to “Other World”) genre has become a staple of the anime scene, and revolves around a protagonist that somehow ends up in a world not their own, which is often fantastical in one way or another. For some western reference points, you don’t need to look any further than stories like The Wizard of Oz or Alice in Wonderland. The anime version of the genre tends to lean darker in setup, with the protagonists often being introduced to their new world after they die and are reincarnated. The most stereotypical cause of death here has been identified and personified by the anime community as Truck-kun — which is to say, the protagonist or their loved ones are struck by a truck, and being killed or placed into a coma sends them to another world — but this is the first time that the serial-transporter will be appearing in a board game.
