Nine Dot Studio was proud to present Outward 2 at PAX East 2024 and help fans of the original return to the world of the original.
Released in 2019, Outward sold 1.3 million copies. Nine Dot Studio has promised to improve the gaming experience in every aspect.
Outward 2 is a challenging action RPG with survival elements focusing on a believable and relatable experience. There is no hand holding, no leveled encounters, no divine gift making you tower over your enemies. Eat your meal, check your map, grab your backpack: a fulfilling adventure awaits.
Nine Dot Games
Outward 2 featured simulated adventure life. You play as a normal person thrown into a hostile dangerous world. With little more than the equipment you can gather and your rucksack, you head off on a quest into the vast regions of Aurai.
Nine Dot Games focused on four areas of improvement when creating this sequel.
1. Combat
They spent more time improving the combat system. The previous version, by their own admission, was clunky. With a small team and a small budget, they did the best the could.
This time around, combat has multiple steps. On top of improving the flow and animation of combat, the studio has created a system with multiple steps. You need to plan out your moves in advanced.
2. Narration
In the original game, the dialogue was text based.
In Outward 2, they have hired a full voice cast which will enhance the experience.
The storytelling aspect of the game improved. Quest and branching storylines are longer and more engaging.
3. Better Character Creation
Nine Dot Studio shared that this was one of the biggest criticisms they received in the original. People often referred to their characters as poorly designed and ugly.
With that in mind, they have enhanced the character creation system. While the demo that I got to sample didn’t show this feature, the development team was eager to share how it had improved.
4. Make The World Feel More Alive
One of the things that the team wished they’d done in the original game was make the world feel more alive and have time flow as it would outside the game.
For Outward 2, this turned into actions such as NPCs moving more naturally. They run errands, they sleep at night, they come and go from their homes.
Another addition to this is a full calendar in the world. There are months, seasons, and even festivals that shape the world as you work your way through the game.
Nine Dot Studio shared that Outward 2 is the only open world RPG to have a split screen mode. Two players can work together to strategically move through the world.
Outward 2 will initially be available on Steam. Nine Dot Games plans to expand to consoles at a later date.
