Have you ever played those indie games that have that extra bit of polish? Like, it’s not your standard “a small team of 10 people” or “one guy with a dream and a laptop” kind of endeavor. Mind you this is said with love: Undertale changed the world, and even more recently, Chants of Senaar would have been my game of the year for 2023 if I hadn’t missed playing until recently.
But there are games that have that little extra bit of polish. That little somethin’ somethin’ in yesteryear you could only get from a triple A game. Something like Darkest Dungeon by (Red Hook), Dead Cells (Evil Empire), or Hades (SuperGiant Games). A lot of roguelite and -likes. It includes even bigger developers like Remedy Entertainment and Larian Studios, developers of the little known games Alan Wake II and Balder’s Gate 3 respectively. When you’re interested in those games with a wider scope that aren’t necessarily your standard Ubisoft or EA joint, you have to hunt down the information.
Enter the Triple I initiative. In this case, III development is intended as a response to AAA development. Yesterday, April 10th, developers who were independent but still on that bigger scale than those smaller, more traditionally indie devs, showcased over 30 indie titles. Slay the Spire 2, 33 Immortals, and Broken Roads were among the announced games, all in one place. They weren’t sandwiched between those even larger, blockbuster titles like Call of Duty or Halo.
Honestly, it was past time for something like this to get done. The games industry is a medium that’s growing up, and with that maturity, comes a need to more effectively categorize. Developers need to be able to be in touch with their target audience, and the audience needs to be able to find what they’re looking for without having to search all over the internet.
Here at Boss Rush, we have a big love for indie games ourselves. What about you? What triple-i games have stolen your heart over the last few years? Do you think there should be more indie showcases?
