Professional wrestling occupies a unique corner of the entertainment world where many tend to focus on the athletics involved more than the storytelling.
While there have been many wrestlers who have wowed as physical and athletic specimens that tell good stories, few leaned heavily into the entertainment side of sports entertainment.
That area is where Windham Rotunda, known in-ring as Bray Wyatt, left a monumental impact.
Rotunda tragically died in August of 2023 at the age of 36. Prior to his death, Rotunda played some of the most memorable characters in WWE history, utilizing a creative genius few could match.
His impact is undeniable and Bray Wyatt: Becoming Immortal shines a light on the third-generation wrestler’s life. You don’t need to be a wrestling fan to enjoy this documentary. For one, it showcases the work and process that goes into being creative.
No matter where you go in entertainment, there is someone creative bringing the story to life. I’ve always found those processes fascinating because of how unique they can be.
Take Heath Ledger and his preparations to portray the Joker in The Dark Knight. Ledger’s portrayal is memorable and the effort that went into it is fascinating.
That’s what you get to see in Becoming Immortal. You see how someone so kindhearted and loving can portray a dark and sinister character.
Another great aspect of Rotunda’s story is you see how much family plays a role in his life. Rotunda’s brother Taylor (AKA Bo Dallas) plays a huge role in his career and personal life.
Rotunda’s family extends to a few other wrestlers who he grew close with, one of which died a couple of years prior to Rotunda. It helps you better understand the grief and sense of loss that comes with losing a loved one.
Lastly, Becoming Immortal offers a good look behind the scenes of the pro wrestling industry. You see how it all works and how Rotunda fit into it all.
Even if you’re remotely interested in pro wrestling or just have a friend that won’t shut up about it, this documentary can help you peak behind the curtain in a way that’s compelling to fans and non-fans alike.
Sure, Bray Wyatt: Becoming Immortal will appeal to long-time wrestling fans that saw his work unfold on screen. Still, those who want an examination of a creative mind, are curious about wrestling, or just want to learn about a compelling person will feel right at home with this documentary.
