WWE 2K24 has something that many other sports games do not.
Every year, it offers MyRise, which is essentially the story mode of the game. Since professional wrestling is a unique form of storytelling, these campaigns tend to be more entertaining.
This year’s iteration focused on up-and-coming wrestling in MyRise.
Undisputed followed the so-called dark horse who got a freak chance at the WWE Undisputed Universal Championship, establishing a name for himself when winning.
Unleashed follows an indie wrestler as she makes the leap to WWE, trying to find herself and who she is as a wrestler.
The through thread of these two stories is William Regal, a wrestler-turned-mentor for many younger and new wrestlers. His official WWE title is Vice President of Global Talent Development.
Many wrestlers speak highly of Regal and his work behind the scenes. His impact is felt throughout WWE and onto other promotions such as All Elite Wrestling.
WWE 2K24 seeks to highlight that impact and, to me, does a fantastic job at it.
In both stories, Regal mentors the main character. He comes across as an advocate for them and his belief in their potential is strong. It helps that his voice acting isn’t mailed in and does include some effort.
I’ve walked away from this game really liking Regal. To me, it’s cool that WWE 2K24 could capture the feeling that many young wrestlers have toward this mentor.
That’s not something I expect out of my sports games, let alone my wrestling games. What makes this more funny is he’s not even on any of the covers.
Cody Rhodes, Rhea Ripley, and Bianca Belair are the cover athletes while the third cover features a medley of WrestleMania stars. In fact, if you picked up the game and didn’t know anything about it, you wouldn’t even know Regal was a big part of it.
And yet, Regal’s star looms large across the MyRise campaigns. His portrayal offers players a glimpse into what the backstage element of wrestling might be and how former wrestler do have an impact on younger talent.
Furthermore, it gives non-fans and newer fans a look at a man who has had a monstrous impact on professional wrestling. You can see why so many highly revere this man.
What about you? Who did you think was the star of WWE 2K24? What did you think about the game overall? What changes would you like to see? Let us know in the comments below or head over to our Discord channel to join the conversation.
