This is Stephanie, Copy Editor and Senior Writer for Boss Rush Network. Nintendo has provided an update about the new console and Direct. This is not a drill. I repeat. This is not a drill.
No doubt you’ve seen the Tweet, but it’s the ensuing conversation (and predictions) amongst our peers that’s the fun part. So, what are YOUR thoughts about Furukawa’s announcement about the Nintendo Switch successor and the upcoming Direct?
Nintendo Switch Successor
I love Nintendo. Say what you will about their online infrastructure and processing power of the console, but damn, I love how direct they are. According to Furukawa, the Switch’s successor will be announced within the fiscal year and NOT at the next Nintendo Direct in June.
Things to keep in mind: Furukawa is talking fiscal year. My thoughts are that Nintendo will want one more good holiday season with the Switch, and the successor will be announced early 2025, perhaps as soon as January and as late as March. I’ve always believed the next console will be an improved iteration of the Nintendo Switch rather than a new gimmick, and I’m sticking to that theory. We’ve talked ad nauseum about what we want to see in the successor, so I’ll leave it at that.
June Nintendo Direct
Furukawa mentioned that there will be a Direct in June that will focus on games for the second half of the year. I believe Furukawa when he said there will be zero mention the Switch successor, and I am setting my expectations low–meaning, remakes/remasters and ports as the primary type of games we will see. This Direct would be ideal for Metroid Prime 2 and/or 3 remaster or The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and/or The Wind Waker remaster. We will likely see more games that were highlighted in the past, such as a specific release date for FANTASY LIFE i: The Girl Who Steals Time.
Sound a little bland? Well, that’s my final point. I think this is a relatively “boring” year, and we as fans of Nintendo need to accept that. Not every year can be a banger like in 2023, and this is the time to enjoy the smaller titles or experience remakes.
