With stats assigned for Seacaster Manor, we take to the sky in this week’s episode of Fantasy High: Junior Year. Our Intrepid Heroes leap into action, but Jawbone sees right through Fabian, drawing him into their battle plans.
Gorgog and Sprak race to the basement, working hard to bring up the cloud rider. The two manage to get it running, and with Seacaster Manor capable of flying on its own arcanatech, they’re no longer completely at the mercy of the mysterious force winding up to throw them to their destruction.
Managing to reorient the ship toward Aguefort Academy, Gorgug guides them back as the Rat Grinders try to do the ceremony to make Porter a god and fail as they were given the wrong name.
Adaine and Fig tag team crowd control. With magic and Fig’s music blaring, the party guests are none the wiser, but as Oisin calls dragons down upon them, it’s a matter of time before somebody notices the chaos and danger that surrounds them and throws the party into a panic.
Riz brings one of the three down, having prepped a shot with Kristen and her double, but the remaining dragons aim straight for Gorgug who is at the helm. Though Gorgug saves himself, the dragons land their first attack.
The house falls below a critical level, causing Aelwyn’s wards to shatter and allowing the dragons to land and tear their way inside. As a small dragon makes an attempt to do just that, Fabian works the crowd before attacking from a nearby window to bring the beast down.
Pulling Mazey into combat along with Ragh, the Bad Kids continue to knock through Oisin’s dragons, barreling onward toward the school as the clock ticked down on election night.
Fig keeps the lie going. Repeating her claims that this is a music video, she even persuades some people to volunteer to help with the canons, suggesting they could be featured. After sending Eugenia into the fray, Fig launches her first attack, smiting a dragon right out of the sky, but she still gets knocked from the sky.
Cassandra rises, but they are once more the Nightmare King, returning in defense of their spouse against the Rat Grinders and Porter’s plot to usurp Ankarna. In the chaos, the dragons nearly kill Gorgug, but Kristen heals him before racing to safety.
Even as they knock dragons from the sky, Jace leaps onto the deck alongside Kipperlilly and Oisin.
However, the second they land, they cast two spells on Gorgug and disappear, but whether the repeated 22s were enough to evade their grasp or not, Brennan doesn’t say.
Though doom hangs over the players, the Bad Kids knock the last two big dragons out of the sky, and in an act of madness, Ally Beardsley strikes with their seasonal chaos. Kristen’s double casts the divine intervention which breaks through the Nightmare King to Cassandra. Brennan loses his mind, but he makes it work.
Highlights
The electrical work in the set this week was incredible. Dropout’s Art Department keeps upping their game, and while Aabria pushed the envelope during her seasons, this seasons is the culmination of all those that came before. Mini-miniatures on a flying ship, lightning dancing in fluffy storm clouds forming an incredible battle map as our players sat in a dome with projected rigging and inclement weather with dragons looming.
Also, ever conscious of the details, multi-colored lights flashed in Seacaster Manor throughout as the party raged.
I was caught off guard a bit when the Nightmare King appeared as they had two left hands. Considering Cassandra is the goddess of doubt, perhaps this was purposeful.
Final Score (4.5 out of 5 Stars)
An incredible episode went absolutely awry with a single word. With the same players returning for multiple seasons, certain patterns start to form. One of the major center pieces of each Fantasy High season is a Beardsley chaos roll. Based on Brennan’s reaction alone, it’s safe to say that no one expected that “Blimey!” would be the expression that broke through Cassandra’s corruption.
That being said, the players and Dimension 20‘s art team truly hit it out of the park. When the time comes to auction the miniatures at the end of the seasons, I envy whoever manages to snag those lightning clouds.
