Who doesn’t love a good laugh?
I know I do so when I stumbled across Mythic Quest on Apple TV+, I knew I had found my sitcom for a season.
For those unaware, Mythic Quest is about a video game developer that runs an MMORPG of the same name. It’s a workplace sitcom set in the developer’s studio and involves a quirky staff.
The show will likely appeal most to fans of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia as it was created by Rob McElhenney along with Charlie Day and Megan Ganz. McElhenney created It’s Always Sunny while Day starred in it and Ganz produced it.
Ubisoft Film and Television is one of the production companies, marking Ubisoft’s first foray into live-action comedy. Furthermore, the developer created a fake video game for the show to give it more of an authentic look.
McElhenney stars in the show as Ian Grimm, the game’s creative director. The rest of the cast features Ashly Burch, Jessie Ennis, Imani Hakim, David Hornsby, Charlotte Nicdao, Danny Pudi, and F. Murray Abraham.
To me, a good sitcom can appeal to a wide audience, but offer a little something for those that can relate to the show the most.
For example, Parks and Recreation had always been funny to me. At a point in my life, I was covering city government for a local newspaper in Arizona. After having a better understanding of municipal government, Parks and Rec became much more funny.
This principle applies to Mythic Quest and it has a special appeal to gamers. There are a lot of jokes and Easter eggs that seem to be included specifically for gamers.
Of course, that doesn’t detract from the general audience’s enjoyment, but gamers will come into this show with a bit extra to enjoy.
One such Easter egg is Burch.
She is part of the writing staff for the show and plays Mythic Quest game tester Rachel. Burch has an extensive career as a writer and voice actress as well as being deeply embedded in the gaming world.
She is likely best known for her portrayal of Aloy in the Horizon series; Chloe Price in Life is Strange: Before the Storm; and Tiny Tina from the Borderlands series.
Non-gaming fans may just see a talented writer and actress, but gamers will see someone who is deep in the world of gaming.
Of course, Mythic Quest may not be for all gamers. Everyone has their personal preferences and that’s OK. What I do think is gamers will find a show that seems to be particularly catered to them.
There aren’t many shows like that out there. The Big Bang Theory really leaned into nerd culture and appealed to a certain demographic. Again, it didn’t land for everyone, but it was one of the few shows geared toward nerds.
Mythic Quest, in my opinion, is a better version of The Big Bang Theory. It’s really witty and smart, lacking the canned laughter so the audience can find its own joke.
It can also be really thoughtful as there was a one-off episode in the middle of the first season that featured a couple developing an indie game and how big-name publishers can derail a vision.
If you’re looking for a show that speaks to your love of video games, Mythic Quest is for you.
