Zelda fans are in for another treat as musician and cover-song specialist Aaron Grubb has released another Zelda cover; this time it’s “Outset Island” from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.
The song, which released June 8, was actually part of a collaboration with Zelda Dungeon for their 2024 Zelda Dungeon Marathon. The annual charity event raised money for No Kid Hungry; this year, the team raised over $17k (USD). Grubb’s song was used in 2024 Marathon video for the event.
I love this rendition of “Outset Island” from Grubb. He somehow manages to capture the feeling of being at sea, with the rolling sound of the stringed instruments and the intermittent notes on the piano that rise like small white caps on waves. As with most Zelda covers from Grubb, the song has strong chill vibes but also inspires creativity and positive energy.
For those unfamiliar with his work, Grubb’s previous Zelda music cover albums, Legend of Zelda, Vol. 1 – Vol. 4, have become widely popular in the Zelda fan community. His renditions of classic tracks from the franchise’s twenty canonical games are always marked by new variations and complexities that make for great listening during study sessions, work days, and car trips. His care and love in crafting these covers ensure the core of what made these songs special remains even as he innovates.
When asked about the possibility of a Legend of Zelda Music Vol. 5, Grubb noted that it is definitely an aspiration; but as always, licensing issues are a roadblock to Zelda music covers and anything Nintendo related.
The independent artist that created the featured art for the song is Kay (Moonglow.And.starshine on IG). You can see the full image below:
