Capcom teamed up with the National Bunraku Theatre to produce Ceremony of the Deity: The Maiden’s Destiny, a stage prequel to their tower defense brawler Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess. “Perform elegant, dance-like sword moves…in the battle against ominous foes,” writes Capcom, describing the game. But they just as effectively describe the show with those words.
This is a Bunraku performance. Bunraku combines several traditional techniques into a single style: narration, shamisen music, and puppetry. Stunning puppets, operated by a team of performers, take the lead as a single narrator tells the story. This performance also incorporates projection effects over a physical set.
The puppets for the Maiden and Soh were crafted using traditional techniques. The performance was supervised by Kanjuro Kiritake, whom Capcom described as “Japan’s Living National Treasure.”
National Bunraku Theatre celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, offering a wide variety of traditional Japanese performing arts including Bunraku. Established in Osaka back in 1984, the National Bunraku Theatre is the centre for the preservation and development of Nigyo Joruri, the art of narration combined with shamisen music and puppetry. This is now widely referred to as Bunraku.
The National Bunraku Theatre is located in Nipponbashi, Osaka. Their current series, incorporating a number of shorter stories, is running through August 25, 2024.
Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess is available on Steam, PlayStation 4 & 5, Xbox Game Pass, and all current Xbox systems. A demo is available now.
