If you live in the European Union, millions of people who play video games will thank you if you do one thing…
Many games rely on constant publisher support to remain playable. Games from major franchises like Battlefield and Call of Duty, and smaller games like Spellbreak, and even many single player games that you paid for the same way you’d pay for games that work essentially forever. What can you do to not lose these games that you invested your time and money into?
And, moreover, what can you do to prevent the art from being destroyed? The work of programmers, artists, writers, animators, and more? 75% of silent films are simply gone, and if we don’t take action this era of gaming will be similarly decimated.
The Stop Killing Games campaign has proposed a new law in the European Union via the European Citizens Initiative. If it’s signed by 1 million EU citizens, it will go under consideration as law with a meaningful legal push behind it.
The law requires “publishers that sell or license videogames to consumers in the European Union (or related features and assets sold for videogames they operate) to leave said videogames in a functional (playable) state.
“An increasing number of publishers are selling videogames that are required to connect through the internet to the game publisher, or ‘phone home’ to function…While this is not a problem in itself, when support ends for these types of games, very often publishers simply sever the connection necessary for the game to function, proceed to destroy all working copies of the game, and implement extensive measures to prevent the customer from repairing the game in any way.”
You can find out how to take part on the Stop Killing Games homepage.
