Freshly released on August 29th to Very Positive reviews on Steam, Akimbot was featured at PAX West 2024, and I had the pleasure of playing the demo.

This game is developed by indie French team, Evil Raptor (the makers behind Pumpkin Jack), and published by PLAION. One of the first things I noticed was how much it reminded of mascot action-platformers such as Ratchet and Clank.

The Akimbot demo started off with a bang. I played as a robot named Exe with a sassy sidekick named Shipset (reminded me of Daxter a lot). I leapt, double-jumped, and zoomed through a hostile environment, shooting enemies while trying to hack my way to the next area. Hacking was fun with a mix of puzzles, and all the while, there is a sense of urgency as the Ambassador coached me throughout the demo.

You have several weapons at your arsenal, depending on the type of enemies you encounter. Some even have shields that require some level of melee to break them down. There is a seamless flow to transition weapons, and there is an added challenge of overheating. Strafing while shooting came in handy, and the controls were responsive. The enemies are tough, providing sufficient challenges, but all my deaths were due to my own impatience.

The platforming was fun as well. The double-jump and dash were intuitive as you navigate the cool sci-fi environments. There was even a neat parkour and grapplehook section that made me feel like I defied gravity.

Akimbot definitely carried some important themes that were noticeable throughout the demo. Worker robots protested while the “great and noble Evilware” exercised his power with violence.

I had a blast with my time with Akimbot, and I recommend checking it out if you like action-adventure platformers with a sci-fi flavor. Check out the Steam description and trailer below:
