A Beat Box for Troubadours: The EP-1320 Provides Medieval Mixes

2–3 minutes

The EP-1320, the Instrumentalis Electronicum, is billed by teenage engineering as “The world’s first medieval electronic instrument.” It offers all that implies, “Hurdy Gurdys, lutes, Gregorian chants, thundering drums, and punishing percussive foley FX.”

The EP-1320 is the first of its kind, featuring a large library of phrases, play ready instruments, and one-shot samples from an age where darkness reigned supreme, The Instrumentalis Electronicum is the ultimate, and only, medieval beat machine.

While it makes for grand marketing, the medieval period was not a dark age, but an essentially bookish period of renewed learning and undertakings to improve and expand human knowledge. The post-Roman collapse was not as pronounced, or in some parts of Europe even as noticeable, as often portrayed.

The line between reality and fantasy is emphasized by the trailer, which places the Instrumentalis Electronicum as something belonging to memories of 80s and 90s fantasy films, caught in the haze of smoke effects, elaborate costumes, and heavy woods.

B&H Photo Video Pro Audio provided a much more detailed look at the machine, showcasing its music, its build, and what to expect from the device.

You can find find the the EP-1320: the Instrumentalis Electronicum on its homepage. You can purchase the device itself for $300 from teenage engineering. Perhaps sensing that Instrumentalis Electronicum has a wider appeal than people who can justify purchasing a beat box, a variety of merchandise is available, including t-shirts, keychains, and a currently sold-out vinyl.
