Star Wars: Empire at War, Petroglyph’s classic real time strategy game, released in 2006. 18 years later, it continues to receive support from the developer, ensuring it continues to operate on modern hardware without headaches or unique problems.
The latest update features performance updates which can improve the framerate on the galactic map up to 50%, and cleaned out a few notable bugs (a crash when Chewbacca steals a vehicle; multiplayer sessions not asking for a password).
Petroglyph has shown dedication to the game. Previous updates have radically repaired the game, ensuring it has pristine operation for years to come. In November 2023, Petroglyph converted Star Wars: Empire at War to a 64-bit application (solving out-of-memory bugs and crashes), multiplayer desync issues, and unit misbehavior. In November 2022, the infamous long save/load times were repaired. In January 2021, additional multiplayer maps were added and further bugs were fixed.
These updates began in 2017, when Petroglyph gave the game a modern multiplayer architecture (saying farewell to the remaining GameSpy architecture), enabling mods direct from the Steam Workshop, and improving stability.
