Nintendo has committed a grave sin with The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, and a group of dedicated, passionate fans aim to fix it. 

Echoes of Wisdom has a lovely array of costumes that allow Princess Zelda to travel the lands of Hyrule in style. This option opens up after completion of the first four dungeons, prior to that Zelda travels the land undercover, using a hood to hide her identity. Once a certain plot point occurs, Princess Zelda reveals her identity, pulling the hood down. Shortly after she is given a travel outfit that harkens to the more classic outfit for the princess. At that point costumes can be freely changed between, including putting the hood back on.

Inexplicably however, as noted by The Legend of Zelda YouTuber “Bread Pirate” in his call to action, Echoes of Wisdom lacks the ability for Princess Zelda to wear the hood down. The only options are to equip the hood fully, or wear something else. The only time Princess Zelda is allowed to wear her hood down is during the couple minutes between revealing her identity and receiving the travel outfit. Never again afterwards.

This is utterly bizarre, considering the box art for Echoes of Wisdom features Zelda wearing the hood, but with it pulled down. Additionally, as pointed out by Bread Pirate, there is Japanese preview footage that showcases gameplay of Princess Zelda in the overworld, with her hood down. Clearly it is possible, it simply is not a feature currently in the game.

Enter the #HoodlessZelda movement.

Led by Bread Pirate in his campaign announcement video, it is a movement which seeks to bring this issue to the attention of the developers. The idea is straightforward. While attempting to reach the ears of Nintendo is folly, Echoes of Wisdom was co-developed by Grezzo, who are a much smaller company, and could feasibly be reached. Thus, the campaign focuses on raising a social media presence that targets Grezzo specifically.

On October 31st, Halloween day, the campaign takes off. Bread Pirate is launching it with a focus on positivity, encouraging reaching out to Grezzo with words of praise in addition to a request for the ability to take Link’s hood down. The rallying cry will be the hashtag #HoodlessZelda. 

Additionally, he requests that those taking part follow Grezzo on X (formerly known as Twitter), in an act of appreciation for developing a wonderful game in The Legend of Zelda series. The hope is a combination of social media presence and polite positivity will manifest in Grezzo engaging with the campaign and perhaps adding the ability to toggle the hood via an update. If the campaign fails, at the very least it will be fun.

The thing that attracts me most to the #HoodlessZelda movement, as somebody who isn’t too personally torn up about the lack of a retractable hood, is the focus on positivity. That is something the culture can always use more of, and I think leading the charge with praise for Grezzo is a lovely token.

In a statement to Boss Rush, Burton Brewster, Bread Pirate said the following:

“I love Echoes of Wisdom, which is why I am so passionate about Hoodless Zelda! 

In a way, I see this movement as my love letter to Grezzo to thank them for the wonderful work they did at creating an honest-to-goodness Zelda fantasy. One I can get lost in for hours!

I only wish I could explore that world the way Grezzo showed on the box art and advertisements. Zelda doesn’t look bad with a hood… but she looks great when it is pulled down. So why not let her?”
