The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom released September 26th, 2024. Some were nervous and/or skeptical of the reception for a 2D Zelda after the two juggernauts known as Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom–even Eiji Aonuma himself. Is there still an appetite for a 2D adventure in a 3D open-world? Let’s look at a recent interview from the BBC to answer this question!

Eiji Aonuma spoke to BBC about the launch of Echoes of Wisdom. Even he was initially uncertain about the future of 2D Zelda games after this franchise’s 40-year history–dare we say, it may have felt “…close to impossible” for Aonuma.
There is no denying the challenge of bringing fresh new elements in a top-down game, especially when gamers have been exposed to Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. However, after observing the gaming community’s response days and weeks after its release, it would seem that the series producer feels more confident that “…there’s still a lot of possibility for these top-down Zelda games as well“.
I would agree with Aonuma, and I also cite our fellow writer’s Boss Rush Banter, 5 Takeaways on The Legend of Zelda’s Future After Echoes of Wisdom, as strong indicators that Nintendo will take a future 2D Zelda seriously. I am relieved, because I am not ready to part ways with 2D video games.
What are your thoughts? Do you think Aonuma’s reaction to Echos of Wisdom solidifies a future for 2D Zelda? Please share your thoughts with us on our Boss Rush Facebook Group or our Boss Rush Discord.
