Tabletop RPGs are being recognized more and more for their therapeutic potential, and not just because our D&D characters seem to be going through whatever we’re going through. With that in mind, 9th Level Games has put together a kid-friendly tabletop game that can be played for family fun or used as a tool to build kids’ social emotional learning skills.
Titled Venture Society, the game casts players as creatures in the world of Animalia. Together, they journey across the land, spreading harmony and helping their fellow animals. Considering this title comes from the makers of feel-good creative TTRPGs like Sentai & Sensibility and Rebel Scum, it’s at home with their portfolio of games.
The game comes with everything needed to run 30-minute adventures right out of the box: 25 pre-fab adventures, six dry-erase character sheets with markers, six dice, and peripherals including cards, tokens, and a jigsaw puzzle. The set also includes a quick-start guide, as well as a Professional’s Guidebook to enable use of Venture Society by camp counselors, librarians, therapists, and others.

For years we have been talking with Venture Society designers Timothy Grant and Dr. Brian Quinones about the benefits of TTRPG’s to build social emotional learning skills. Not only do we think playing TTRPG’s helping all ages with social skills, we feel it is especially good for children. Unfortunately, there are not many TTRPG’s aimed specifically at the 5-12 year old group. We felt it was important to make a TTRPG for that age group that was cool and fun for them as the main goal. THEN, the added benefit that it also reinforces SEL Social Emotional Learning skills is a bonus. Professionals can use the game as a therapeutic or education tool, but parents can also use it to just have fun with their kids. Win win!
