Geoff Keighley rang in the 10th annual Game Awards on Thursday, December 12th, 2024. The formatting was no surprise, starting with a pre-show, a handful of awards that actually allowed speeches, a plethora of trailers, and musical numbers. While I could easily copy and paste the winners of each category, let’s discuss the real winners and losers from this year’s show. For as you know, not all heroes wear capes.
Amir Satvat and the Game Changers Award
Firstly, Geoff introduced a brand-new award, the Game Changer Award. While addressing the topic of layoffs was sorely needed last year, it was great to see this host finally acknowledge this issue on a platform as large as this. More importantly, he created the very first Game Changer Award and gave it to Amir Satvat, who has made a difference to those that were impacted by the tsunami of layoffs in the video game industry. Also, if anyone knows where Amir got that Zelda jacket, please message me.
Check out the segment here. It’s worth watching:
Statler and Waldorf
The Muppets appearances can sometimes be a little too cheesy, but these two old cronies–Statler and Waldorf–nailed it. They perhaps stole the show from Mr. Keighley with their sick burns (DLC as a Game of the Year Contender and run-time length). The ability for The Game Awards to poke fun at itself and address awkward topics through these fellas really helped bring a sense of self-awareness that people appreciate.
“How Long is this Bozo Gunna Go On?“:
Snoop Dogg and The Game Awards Orchestra
The Game Awards always puts on good musical numbers, but Snoop Dogg’s performance was infectious as the crowd danced in star-struck awe. But it simply wasn’t just his star power; Snoop Dogg put on a quick but fun performance to help break out the stream of “World Premieres”.
Of course, we need to acknowledge The Game Award Orchestra in their Game of the Year mash-up, and of course, Flute Guy (Pedro Eustache) was there in all his flute (and more) glory.
Prattling off Game Award Winners Again?
Despite your opinion on what The Game Awards should focus on, it is always a loss when Geoff rattles off several categories and their winners. This robs well-deserving recipients of a speech, even if it’s a short one.
The Silent Ones?
While I wouldn’t label this as a “losers” bucket, but we did feel some loss when it comes to those that were not present or addressed at this year’s Game Awards. We didn’t see much Kojima or Xbox presence, nor updates on highly anticipated games like Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater and Silksong. Nintendo was pretty quiet at this award show too. Generally speaking, Nintendo isn’t a huge player at this event; however, they were particularly absent… but perhaps they are busy working on something… I do want to shout out the Game of the Year segment where Nicolas Doucet credits this company indirectly for being a pioneer in platformers.
