Now that the Tri dust has settled on The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, it’s worth considering: What do you want out of the next Zelda game? Nintendo has produced two groundbreaking, if not controversial hits in each of the past two installments. But these very different games have left some wondering what the future of the series holds.
The Echo mechanic in Echoes of Wisdom gave players unlimited ways to solve puzzles and take on enemies, similar to the Ultrahand mechanic in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. However, both of these games focused on open-ended puzzle-solving and exploration.
While these games have their fans, many long for a return to classic Zelda, both in the 3D and top-down games. Should Nintendo return to puzzles that have one solution, which require players to solve the problem as the game developers intended? What about using item acquisition as a lock on parts of the map as games such as Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, and Skyward Sword have done?
And of course, for as much as Nintendo tried to return to traditional dungeons in Tears of the Kingdom and Echoes of Wisdom, these dungeons still lacked the traditional linear progression that dungeons in older Zelda games have had. But perhaps this kind of singular progression is an anachronism best left in the past. After all, series producer Eiji Aonuma has said that “open-air Zelda” is the future of the franchise.
