After Skies of Arcadia released 25 years ago in October on the Sega Dreamcast and later on Nintendo GameCube in December 2002, it has definitely been a long period of time since we have got to play as Vyse and his amazing fellow crew members. SEGA has not shown much attention or love to this classic RPG, that in my opinion was amazing, but could that have changed?
SEGA has recently been on an IP bender of renewing dormant franchises lately. We saw a trademark for Echo the Dolphin recently and at The Game Awards 2024 we saw franchises like Golden Axe and Streets of Rage getting some overhauls. We as players are always excited to play these older franchises and hope that the company does the IP justice, but some games have never received that treatment or have not had a sequel. SEGA on January 16th filed two trademarks, one for Skies of Arcadia and the other Eternal Arcadia, which is its Japanese name. These trademarks became public on January 24th, 2025.
I played Skies of Arcadia Legends on the Nintendo GameCube, for me the Nintendo GameCube had a ton of excellent RPGs on it and Skies was on my top 5 RPGs alongside games such as, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean, Baten Kaitos: Origins, Tales of Symphonia, and plenty of other great games. It seems to make sense to bring back the series in some form or fashion. What we don’t know though is if this is a new game, a remaster or remake, or just something as simple as a product line of new socks or shot glasses we shall have to wait and see.
Though it could be confirmation that GameCube games could be coming in the form of Nintendo Online, my hope is to see a remake or a remaster from SEGA to allow newcomers and fans alike to enjoy the game. Once that is established a new game in the series could bring excitement for classic RPG enthusiasts. To fly around in a pirate ship discovering new locations and battling with your party as well as ship battles Assassin’s Creed style with amazing graphics and musical scores could bring it out of its slumber. Anything really would be amazing using this IP.
Have you played Skies of Arcadia on Dreamcast or GameCube? Would you enjoy a new game in the series, or would you prefer bringing back the original in some fashion? What other RPG games did you enjoy from that era of gaming? Let us know your thoughts on the topic.
