Day 2 of CECC Texas 2025 was everything you want from a collegiate esports festival: high-stakes brackets, hometown heroes, upsets that turned heads, and a venue buzzing with the energy of players, fans, and an entire community that’s five years strong.
Whether you were watching the Overwatch competition, rooting for a reverse sweep in Smash Bros., or locking into Street Fighter 6’s main stage debut, Day 2 proved that May Madness lives up to the name.
Overwatch: Titans Clash, Brackets Collapse
Overwatch playoffs wasted no time heating up. Early in the morning, Northwood swept Converse to set up a marquee quarterfinal against Arizona State, who earned their first stage appearance at CECC.
The real story? CECC history being written.
- Illinois State and Maryville—both former CECC champions—faced off in the semifinals for the first time ever.
- It wasn’t close. Illinois State looked locked in, sweeping Maryville 3-0 to secure a grand finals spot and a chance to make CECC history by becoming the first team to win three titles and the first to go back-to-back in Overwatch.
On the other side of the bracket, Fisher College swept Northwood in the second semifinal, setting up a blockbuster finals showdown against the reigning champs.
Your OWCRA Top 4? All made it. It’s the battle of the best, and only one will walk away as the May Madness monarch.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: UTA Keeps the Dream Alive
If you like chaos, Super Smash Bros. was your game of the day.
The first headline:
North Texas shocked the bracket by eliminating Northwood 2-0 in the lower bracket.
Fisher College then stormed their way to the grand finals through the upper bracket, taking out Oakland 2-0 despite a shuffled roster.
But the biggest story?
UT Arlington, the No. 1 seed, took the long road.
- First, they swept North Texas to avenge the Northwood upset.
- Then they downed Lubbock Christian 2-0 in the lower semifinals.
- Finally, under the bright lights of their home state, UTA pulled off a 2-1 win over Oakland, punching their ticket to a rematch with Fisher.
It’s the kind of script Hollywood would ask you to tone down—but in Texas, it’s just Saturday.
Street Fighter 6: Florida Showdown, Underdogs Rise
Street Fighter 6 made its CECC main stage debut, and the punches came fast.
After early-round sweeps from Harms, Abyssal, and Qaaa, the stage was set for some killer quarterfinals.
- QAAA barely escaped a comeback attempt from Hippo.
- Paladin, still undefeated in rounds, knocked out the top seed Harms in a clinical set.
- Abyssal edged out LukeSFH in a JP mirror, and Bloo closed out the final quarterfinal against Davy.
What’s wild? Both Paladin and Bloo hail from Florida International University—they’ll face off in the upper final for a shot at the title. Meanwhile, QAAA (University at Albany) and Abyssal (CSU Long Beach) are fighting for survival in the lower bracket.
Florida may run the winner’s bracket, but the underdogs are ready to punch their ticket on Sunday.
The Vibe: Celebrating 5 Years of CECC
Throughout the venue, there was a celebratory energy as EsportsU and the community reflected on five years of CECC. Content creators, college staff, and competitors were locked into every clutch moment—and also having a blast offline.
This isn’t just some event you play in and go to the next this event is where memories are held forever this is where opportunity’s happen for the next generation to come whether its being a player, editor, photographer, and all the way to a caster this is a spark for many to come and i hope to see it many more years in the making.

Three games, three finals, and a historic Sunday ahead that I’m excited about.
