All it took was a free sticker. I was lured to the Buffalo Buffalo booth where I played the demo for Fresh Tracks. This play on words scratches only the surface when it comes to this feast of the auditory senses.
Fresh Tracks, at its core, is a rhythm game. However, you are Skaii, cruising through a winter wonderland on skiis! You lean, crouch, jump, and slash with your mythical ice sword to the rhythm of the song (which is visualized well and easy to see). You avoid obstacles and gain favor of the gods, all of which, have their own genre of music. Yes. With each level and god, you play to electric, metal, classical, rap, and more.
In addition to the rhythm-based gameplay, there are rogue-lite elements where various upgrades can improve each run. And if that wasn’t enough, I saw a rich narrative that I can see unfold into something epic. Fresh Tracks does a wonderful job balancing these elements where rhythm game experts can tear it up, while novices such as myself can still thoroughly enjoy the experience.
I learned from the creators that there is a heavy influence on Scandanavian culture with very liberal creative twists. Their love for music is reflected in their game, and I’m very much looking forward to its release. There is a lot of personality to this title that should not be missed.
