If you’ve played enough video games, you know the moment. You’re on your last sliver of health, hands shaking, on the verge of giving up. You’ve lost to this final boss so many times that you’ve memorized every attack pattern. And then, with one desperate move, you win. All that effort, all that emotion — it has to mean something. But sometimes, victory doesn’t feel like triumph. Sometimes it feels hollow, haunting, or even heartbreaking.
These are the final boss fights that didn’t just test my skills — they drained me emotionally, mentally, and narratively. And I loved every second of it. Rankings start with the third place ranking and work their way up to first.
The Rat King — The Last of Us Part II
The Last Of Us Part II takes a seat in third place. Countless moments of fear and desperation engulfed me while playing this. The moment Abby reaches the abandoned hospital, she is in hell. This nightmare fuel, fungal mass, emerges from the shadows, causing pure, primal terror. What truly makes the Rat King fight so unforgettable is the dreadful atmosphere. There are flashing lights, the eerie sound of clickers and bloaters singing in the distance, and there in front of you, the true definition of an infection. It’s so chaotic, suffocating, and brilliant. There’s no time to breathe, just fighting, button mashing, and praying that you have enough bullets and Molotovs. Even when you think it’s done and over with, the Rat King comes back for more. In many ways, the Rat King isn’t just a boss; it’s a symbol. A towering, screaming reminder that there is no clean end in The Last of Us. Just layers of death, decay, and survival stitched together.
Micah Bell — Red Dead Redemption 2
Micah Bell. If you’re a true fan, that name rings a bell louder than Dutch screaming that “he has a plan.” In Red Dead Redemption 2, Micah is a representation of utter betrayal and stale bitterness. For most of the game, he taunts Arthur, acting like a meddling parasite that’s killing you from within. This resentment festers as Arthur gets noticeably weaker throughout his journey. Instead of a big and fancy brawl, this is a slow and agonizing confrontation. It’s the realization of a true villain.
The Storm — Life Is Strange
What’s a better feeling than knowing that no matter what you choose, someone will get hurt? In Life Is Strange, Max battles the storm with Chloe. The wind is blowing, trees crashing down, and that damn deer… Every decision made has come to this final moment. The choice must be made, and time can’t be rewound. It’s the scary moment of knowing that once the storm settles, things will forever be changed, and your choices matter.
