On August 4, Weapons director Zach Cregger sat down with Inverse and revealed the plans for his upcoming film adaptation of the beloved video game franchise, Resident Evil. Cregger stated, “It is obedient to the lore of the games, it’s just a different story,” He continued, “I’m not going to tell Leon’s story, because Leon’s story is told in the games. [Fans] already have that.”
Now, as a fan of Resident Evil, I must admit that I wanted a faithful retelling of the existing characters that currently partake in the franchise’s world. However, Cregger might be one of the only directors I trust to tell an original story for the video games we all know and love. Following his success with Barbarian (2022) and Weapons (2025), I have nothing but trust. Those two films highlight that he knows what it takes to bring life into the survival horror genre.
It’s fair to be upset, though. When the Resident Evil films that came before Cregger’s take have been (subjectively) disappointing to fans, it’s valid to have the initial reaction of, “Oh, not again…”
The situation is similar to the film adaptation of the popular video game, Until Dawn. Fans were expecting the same cast to come back and have it take place in the eerie snowy-filled mountains, yet that was not the case at all. (Hot take: I enjoyed the Until Dawn movie.) I had the same expectations, but I wasn’t disappointed by how the movie turned out. It referenced the games and brought in one of the voice actors for his original role.
Cregger is playing it smarter here. He’s telling everyone what to expect now instead of having fans find out through a trailer. He calls himself a worshipper of the games and will tell a story that respects the lore and rules. For now, we can do nothing but wait until it’s out. The pitchforks and doubts can be put down for now.
In my opinion, this is nothing different to what Capcom does for the franchise. The next installment of the Resident Evil games features an entirely new face in the same world. Resident Evil Requiem will introduce FBI agent Grace Ashcroft. Grace is no Leon Kennedy or a Jill Valentine, but we are all excited for RE9, no?

The same trust should extend to Cregger’s new story in the game’s world.
