Here at PAX West 2025, Nintendo had 2 big booths for their upcoming first-party titles, and the other booth showcased their third-party and indie partners’ games playable on Switch 2. No Switch versions for some of these games were shown or playable. One of the titles I played was Square Enix Final Fantasy VII Remake: Intergrade for Nintendo Switch 2.
The demo was a boss fight named Scorpion Sentinel. You can control the main character, Cloud, and his other party member, Barrett, by switching to each when necessary. In this boss fight, Scorpion Sentinel has a range of attacks, from using its tail and feet. It shocks a big area on the ground around itself, shoots a big laser with its tail, attacks while walking on the wall, and will fire rapidly on either character if you do not hide behind a wall in the arena you fight him in.
With those deadly moves at its hand, you may feel overwhelmed, but in the demo, you are equipped with special moves and flashy attacks that will help you take it down. Cloud uses his Buster Sword to attack. Cloud can use Fire, while Barrett can use Lightning and Healing magic. With these magics and some special attacks known as Limit Breaks, you have a strong chance to defeat this boss.
For my playthrough, I didn’t encounter any stutters, frame drops, or slowdown. The high octane action ran smoothly at 30-frames-per-second, and transitions between Cloud and Barrett were so smooth, with no loading issues affecting the battle at any point. I was hacking away with Cloud and hitting the boss with Barrett’s biggest moves. It was such a great battling experience. I even got the boss stunned twice in the demo by hitting it with the right attacks that raised its stun bar underneath its health bar. All this was on Switch 2 in dock mode. I wasn’t able to try it handheld (we had to choose between dock or handheld because of the line, so no doubling up), but after observing others play it at the demo booth, we probably won’t experience those problems playing it in portable mode.
Sadly, before I could get my final attacks in, the demo ended, and I was left with amusement and a bit defeated, but I enjoyed every moment, and it felt tremendous with the Switch 2 Pro Controller. Having the chance to revisit Midgar in a new way with Final Fantasy VII Remake: Intergrade makes the anticipation for this game challenging, as the game is releasing this year in December. We don’t have an official date yet, but once it is announced, it will be a title you probably should pick up and have in your library if you never played the original or Remake on PS4.
