Three new games have been added to Nintendo Switch Online’s SNES offerings, foremost among them the obscure mouse-controlled Mario & Wario. Fans of mascot platformers will enjoy the addition of BUBSY in: Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind, and fighting game fans have been served with FATAL FURY SPECIAL.
Mario & Wario
The Game Freak-developed Mario & Wario was a unique title in that it required the SNES mouse to be played, as the accessory is used to guide a fairy that will attempt to lead Mario to safety through a hazard-filled level, in gameplay that is very similar to the classic Lemmings. The game is essentially a Switch 2 exclusive, as it can only be played using mouse controls, via the joycon or a USB mouse. Notably, this is the first time Mario & Wario has been officially available outside of Japan.
BUBSY in: Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind
Despite the lengthy name, 1993’s BUBSY in: Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind is perhaps better known simply as Bubsy, as it is the very first game in the long-running series. Developed and published by Accolade, the side-scrolling mascot platformer features the titular Bubsy,who is on a quest to save his yarn collection from invading aliens called “Woolies.” These dastardly devils are specifically out to steal all of earth’s yarn. We all have hobbies, I suppose.
FATAL FURY SPECIAL
Last, but certainly not least, is FATAL FURY SPECIAL, from the same year. This SNK classic was initially released in 1993 for arcades as well as the Neo Geo, but it received a SNES port in 1994, which was well-regarded by critics. FATAL FURY SPECIAL is an update on Fatal Fury 2, including new characters and an updated gameplay engine allowing for better combos and smoother gameplay.
Customers can access these new titles through Nintendo Switch Online’s “Super Nintendo” category. It is available to all NSO subscribers without the need of the additional Expansion Pass.
