One of the highlights of Limited Run’s 10th Anniversary event was the physical vault. For every $250 you spent at the store, you’d get one ticket to enter this vault. The vault contains at least ONE of every numbered title. It’s a physical gamer’s dream. So, what was that like?
The physical vault was guarded at the back of the Limited Run retail store, away from prying eyes. Many customers I spoke with were keen on entering, hoping to pick out a certain game on their list. The most commonly sought out titles included: Samurai Jack, Blasphemous, and Firewatch. I also learned quickly that Nintendo Switch versions were the most desired platform, followed by PlayStation 4 and 5, then Xbox.
After working diligently all-day writing articles, I shopped around as well and earned several tickets to enter this vault. Every time you enter the vault, you have sixty seconds to pick out the number of games you earned. Here’s the kicker: everything has been randomized. They are all out of order. Not alphabetical. Not numerical. And not by system. It turned the hunt into something like Supermarket Sweep (a reference for those old folks like me).
Here are some photos of this exclusive, ultra-secret vault (that are no longer secret now that the event is over!):

The vault was restocked occasionally with whatever was available, but by the time I entered it, I could tell you had to be there early if you wanted something specific.
Now, how were there so many games? Especially older ones? Well, despite what some people think, Limited Run doesn’t re-print. Ever. Overhearing a conversation with Josh Fairhurst, President of Limited Run, and a few customers, Josh recounted stories of purchasing numbered Limited Run games off e-Bay so he could stock the physical vault for this event. Games were not re-printed. How can we prove this is true? One of those customers was one of the sellers on e-Bay! It was respectable the lengths Limited Run went to provide access to rare games for their 10th anniversary and continue to follow their strict rules of a one-time print.
It was quite the rush, and I hope Limited Run can do something like this again.
