Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment has been an enjoyable experience thus far, with a cast of characters both familiar and new. Even though Tears of the Kingdom didn’t have DLC, this Warriors-style spin-off that claims to be cannon acts as a decent stand-in. This banter will look at the roster available from the first three chapters, and I will revisit as I progress through the game. What characters from the first three chapters do you favor when engaging in battle?
Zelda
Cliche or not, I love fighting as Zelda in Age of Imprisonment. Her move sets with her Blade of Light and power over time are smooth and tons of fun to play around with. She moves swiftly and has both short- and long-range attacks. Zelda also has some powerful Sync Strikes with allies such as Mineru and King Rauru.
Quino
I think most Zelda fans lean toward characters they are familiar with such as King Rauru and Zelda, but I’ve also grown particularly attached to the strong yet at times unsure Quino. He is a very heavy hitter with his two-handed sword, and the damage he deals when he slams onto the ground or performs a non-stop “spin attack” is devastating. While there are times his slow wind-up can leave me open to attack, Quino can be fun to play when you need a heavy hitter and want to feel utter brute strength.
Calamo
Okay, it’s not always about size. This little dude, like he says in the game, is not just a traveler, but he can fight too. Calamo deals elemental attacks at a fast pace, and they can take out lots of enemies in one fell swoop. I also appreciated the elemental attacks, so I don’t need to worry about constantly assigning and reassigning Zonai devices (that I tend to forget or give up when I get overwhelmed). His sync strikes are also a blast, literally and figuratively, where most times you can bombard enemies from afar with elements of your choosing.
Honestly, I think Calamo is one of the best fighters in the game thus far.
What I found interesting was how little I cared for the Mysterious Construct. Let me rephrase. I like the not-so-subtle mystery, and I love the design, but I didn’t find his move sets anything to write home about. The flying sections were fun because they oddly reminded me of Starfox, but other than that, I found myself leaning hard on Calamo and Quino instead of the Mysterious Construct in every mission.
The cast of characters have been decent so far, although I hope for a diverse roster in future chapters. I will return to share more of my favorites.
