It’s been a busy news cycle the last few weeks, ranging from the announcement of a Steam console to the Nintendo Direct featuring the very first trailer of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Another subtle news drop was a teaser for the next Legend of Zelda LEGO set, which will release sometime next year. After the massive 2-in-1 Deku Tree debut set, I believe this next one needs to scale down its size and price.
The teaser Nintendo dropped clearly depicts the scene of the final showdown between Link and Ganon in one of the most beloved games in the franchise, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. More specifically, it is when Ganondorf was bested by Link and uses the Triforce of Power in a last-ditch effort to transform into the pig beast Ganon. While that may not be many people’s first guess as to the follow up to the Great Deku Tree, it certainly is understandable why Nintendo and LEGO made this choice.
The first Legend of Zelda LEGO set was the 2-in-1 Great Deku Tree, where you have the option to build the Breath of the Wild or the Ocarina of Time version. For $300 USD, it certainly sent some fans into a tizzy, and as much as that was too much of a price point for me, I actually had defended it in a previous Boss Rush Banter. In short, the number of pieces, complexity, and franchise popularity should be taken into consideration, and the Great Deku Tree contained a whopping 1500 pieces.
I was gifted this LEGO set, and between my son and I, we still haven’t finished it. We are both the types of people that appreciate LEGOs and massive Zelda fans, and my son has built many sets, but we found this one a bit daunting. It required several sessions, and when you have large gaps in time, it can be difficult to pick up where you left off. Or heaven forbid, you made one wrong move, and you don’t realize it until 30 steps later, and you need to disassemble everything.
Conversely, let’s look at the recent Nintendo Game Boy LEGO. The set contained 421 pieces and cost $60 USD. Not only was it more affordable, but it was also more approachable to a general audience. Don’t be fooled by its smaller, less-complex size. The Game Boy design was brilliant, with interchangeable “screens” and realistic buttons. We already have people who’ve found ways to play Game Boy games on this thing.
Now, let’s go back to the teaser. With an epic villain like Ganon, it only makes sense that the set would be epic in size and scope like The Mighty Bowser. That set features a HUGE Bowser, comprised of just under 3,000 pieces and a $270 USD price tag. I get it. I really do; however, I hope LEGO shows restraint with Ganon.
I’m not asking, nor expecting, this set to be unusually cheap or pathetically small, but rather, I hope Nintendo and LEGO understand that bigger isn’t necessarily better. Overall, fans seem cautiously optimistic for it, including myself.
To close, if I were to make my personal predictions, I feel it will be more like a diorama. Given that Link will be traditional LEGO character size, Ganon has to be ten times larger, but not as large as The Mighty Bowser. Yes, we will have cute bubble Navi. And the price? I’m going to predict about $150-200 USD (this is pure guessing here based on trends and expectations).
