After news broke that LEGO will be releasing its first Legend of Zelda set this year, the internet flooded with love…and criticism. LOTS of criticism–one of which is price, set at $299.99 USD. Is The Legend of Zelda LEGO set a rip off?

This LEGO set features a 2-in-1 Deku Tree with four figurines. It will contain 1500 pieces total. So, how does one quantify if this is a good deal or not?

First of all, I always take into consideration the premium you pay for a LEGO product. It is a brand name, and all brand names come with a higher price tag. Look at prescription drugs–brand prices are significantly more expensive than the generic alternatives. Same goes with other brands like Kleenex, which are priced at a premium over store brand tissues. Brand names tout quality and considers themselves “top-tier”. Whether or not you agree the non-branded versions are lower quality, we do know they are almost always priced lower to provide a competitive edge.

Now, let’s also factor in licensing from Nintendo. Any licensed property is going to also come at a premium. Companies with famous franchises like Nintendo and Disney aren’t going to let you print their characters and set pieces for free. Anyone who thinks otherwise may want to take a moment to think about it.

With that all being said, brickbucks.net calculated the average price per piece of LEGO at $0.18/piece. This figure was calculated off an average from over 1000 LEGO sets released during 2019 and 2021.

So, if the Deku Tree set is approximately $300 USD and has 2500 pieces, that puts it at $0.12/piece. So, all things being equal, no, this new set is NOT a rip off.

Of course, whether something is “too expensive” is ultimately a subjective thought. I won’t deny that $300 isn’t something an average adult living in 2024 can easily procure after paying rent/mortgage, groceries, gas, child expenses, etc; however, one must look at the facts, the data, and understand that compared to LEGO’s history, this $300 price tag isn’t really unfair. If you want to buy a cheap Zelda knock off product, go ahead. But remember, you get what you pay for.
