Konami announced during Thursday’s Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase that their latest retro collection focuses on the legendary Bomberman titles from the 8-and-16-bit eras. and is available today for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 consoles, as well as PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam.
Super Bomberman Collection assembles all five Super Bomberman games, as well as Bomberman 1 & 2 for the Nintendo Famicom. This should be welcomed news for fans of the series, as neither Super Bomberman 4 or 5 have ever seen official release outside of Japan.
Also new to this collection is a “Boss Rush” mode, which throws players into a gauntlet against bosses from across all of the games in challenging, consecutive battles.
Fans can also view a collection of over 200 exclusive artwork images, and listen to music from across the franchise in the in-game gallery mode; players can even create their own playlist of favorite tunes to jam out to.
Lastly, the Super Bomberman Collection is compatible with Nintendo Switch’s “GameShare” function, where one person who owns the game can share it with up to 3 others, and play together on separate consoles.
Bomberman first arrived as a game for Japanese computer systems in 1983, developed and published by Hudson Soft. The franchise grew in popularity throughout the decades, with the series seeing consistent entries up until 2010. The franchise then went into hiatus until 2017’s release of Super Bomberman R, though it has been relatively quiet since then.
Konami acquired majority stake in Hudson Soft in 2005, and in 2012 the two Japanese companies merged.
While the Super Bomberman Collection does compile a lot of titles from the classic game series, there are still several Bomberman games missing, including Bomberman ’94/Mega Bomberman, Saturn Bomberman, Bomberman 64, Bomberman Land, and more. Still, this is a wonderful assortment of some of the best Bomberman games around.
Konami has recently become known for producing stellar collections of its classic games, including compilations for Castlevania, Contra, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Metal Gear Solid, and Yu-Gi-Oh! The Super Bomberman Collection looks to continue this trend of preserving some of gaming’s greatest hits.
