Konami has confirmed that the latest game in the Castlevania franchise will not be a roguelike, which many fans suspected.
Published by Konami, Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is being jointly developed by the studios Evil Empire and Motion Twin, both of which have collaborated before on the roguelike game Dead Cells. Evil Empire also delivered last year’s roguelike The Rogue Prince of Persia. Considering both studios’ histories of developing roguelike games, many fans believed Belmont’s Curse would play similarly.
However, Konami’s Head of Communications for the Americas, Tommy Williams, stated to The Verge that “Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is a 2D Action-Exploration game where players can freely explore vast, elaborately crafted maps. It is not a roguelike or roguelite game.”
This strongly suggests that Belmont’s Curse will be more akin to the “metroidvania” genre, one that Castlevania: Symphony of the Night helped pioneer back in 1997.
Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse was announced during the February 2026 Sony PlayStation State of Play presentation, and it is scheduled to release this year for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PC.
Set in 1499, players will follow the journey of the descendant of vampire hunter Trevor Belmont and his wife Sypha Belnades, who braves Dracula’s haunting castle which has manifested directly over the city of Paris, France.
Belmont’s Curse is the 26th main entry in the stories gaming franchise, and is the first new entry since 2014’s Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2. Furthermore, it is the first traditional 2D installment since 2008’s Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia.
