I have always enjoyed side-scrolling games, especially ones where you can revisit once you acquire a weapon, power, key, etc. that allows you to further your mission. I have grown up with games such as Metroid and Mega Man that really shaped my perspective on this viewpoint and formula. The perspective has always been a popular one, but sometimes my favorite thing a well-established IP can do is switch the viewpoint and make something totally new, but familiar.
Two things happened in the past few months that made me consider this topic. The first is that I had recently visited family in Japan, and while there I played a claw machine game and won a really nice Mega Man figure that got me thinking about the games I use to play back on the NES and SNES, How my grandma bought me Mega Man X and how I enjoyed the complexity and fun of it all. Combined this thought with me completing Metroid Prime 4: Beyond recently on my Switch 2 and some crazy and not so crazy ideas swirled in my head.

Metroid took a side scrolling game that I loved and put a different perspective into play, which took what I know I already loved and gave it another angle for players to enjoy. Another good example of this is The Legend of Zelda series, we have so many different viewpoints that make the games so fun and fascinating, from top-down, to side scrolling, to third person, and even first-person, we have seen a smattering of different ways to play. So why hasn’t Capcom made a shift in perspective?
I really would love to see Capcom, take the blue bomber himself and put him in a first-person perspective. Take the cartoon-like color scheme and trade it in for a Resident Evil art style, and give Mega Man a world of circuitry, psycho robots, and a new story to unravel. How amazing it would be to see through Mega Man’s eyes, take on massive robot enemies, and surf on his robotic dog Rush as he tries to stop Dr. Wiley. I would like to believe this game would be utterly amazing.
What are your thoughts on a first-person Mega Man game? Would you welcome a new perspective and art style in the series? Have you played the new Metroid Prime 4: Beyond game yet? Do you prefer the side scrolling or the first-person view more? What are your thoughts on this subject?
