News broke that Australia and New Zealand will be getting a Switch 2 + Pokémon Pokopia bundle. This product line follows the Mario Kart World and Pokémon Legends: Z-A bundle. Even though the Pokémon Pokopia bundle hasn’t been confirmed whether it will expand to the worldwide market, it’s still the 3rd bundle since the Switch 2 launched last year, and I’ve been disappointed by one trend–the lack of design and theming on the console and Joy-Con 2 themselves.
Each of these three bundles have the SAME black coloring with splashes of red and blue. Yes, the design is still sleek and nice to look at, but what happened to all the fun special editions that led fans to double dip?
Remember The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Switch OLED? We also had special editions of the Switch OLED for Pokémon Scarlett and Violet and Splatoon 3, special editions for the Switch Lite, and of course, special editions for the standard Switch (Mario Red + Blue, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Monster Hunter Rise, etc). Each had brilliant colors that went in-theme with the game or franchise that attached customers from around the world. The variety continued to help sell the console and its accessories with the release of specialized Joy-Cons, such as the pastel color line.
While the Switch 2 is still relatively new, they’ve dropped massive titles like Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, Kirby Air Riders, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, and Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. Where are the colorful, and cute matching consoles? Or at least special Joy-Con 2 that fit the theme? Is Nintendo trying to play it “cool” by sticking with the sleek yet boring black design and muted red and blue? I believe part of the success of the first Switch (among several reasons) is its personality. There was so much customization to show your love for Nintendo IP, and a means to mix and match.
Nintendo still has the opportunity to release special editions; however, it’s just been a disappointment so far given that two (soon to be three) bundles are already available. I hope this isn’t a sign that Nintendo has lost that bit of fun and imagination with their products; if anything, it would help push console sales.
