Analysis
Another day getting ready and heading off to school. Follow the story of a young boy as he traverses school and navigates his first crash. He watches from afar in observation as he learns and adapts to getting closer to the person he admires.

The gameplay
The Day I Became a Bird starts off inFranks’s home as he gets ready to head off for school. Interacting with his dog, grabbing some breakfast, and then hopping on his bicycle to get in a day of learning with his peers. It’s here at school that he notices a girl named Sylvia and she is obsessed with birds.

Frank is shy and keeps his distance watching and observing what Sylvia is doing, which is drawing all sorts of different birds. Through storytelling, quick-time events, and simple puzzles. After having a bicycle accident, you watch the story of Frank unfolding revealing that he is developing a crush on Sylvia.
Frank travels to a few different areas in the game, mainly school and the park. He interacts with the environment to unveil small pieces of the story and to collect golden feathers within each level. Most puzzles consist of putting pieces of a picture back together to advance the story along while one of the bigger missions is a fetch quest to get leaves, coat hangers, branches, etc. to make a costume.

The costume Frank ends up making is of a giant bird. Frank is shy and is working up the bravery to approach Sylvia with what he believes will be the most effective way to gain her attention. He travels to school in the oversized bird cage to test his theory where everyone seems to point, stare, and even laugh at him. Later he comes across Sylvia watching birds, sketching, and singing in the park. When Frank doesn’t get noticed he feels unworthy causing him distress.
It is finally when the awkwardness of the bird costume causes him to topple over hitting the ground that things start to come together. Sylvia finally notices Frank in the costume, but she can see past this homemade bird suit and acknowledges Frank directly. Frank didn’t have to pretend to be a bird after all to be noticed and this realization brought him happiness. Of course, we all want to be seen, acknowledged, and wanted.

Final Score
The Day I Became a Bird brings a lighthearted tale to life through various art mediums and perspectives, varying gameplay and story sequences, and tells a unique way in which a kid just wants to be noticed by someone. The beautiful hand-drawn artwork really shines through and gives this game actual storybook vibe, which is fitting since this is based off one. The music also was a great accompaniment to the overall landscape of this game.
The game is very simplistic, so I did not come across too many issues with the game. I had a few issues with some of the touch-screen oriented tasks which just seemed uncalibrated at times, but it could be speed of the hardware. Either way the minor issues did not affect overall enjoyment of the game at hand.

Based on what I experienced in the game this is a nice quaint puzzle type game that shows a team’s passion of trying to convey a story. The Art style was definitely holds the players attention and the quick paced story sequences between puzzles and areas made for a nice pace while understanding what is taking place to Frank. I think this is a great game for families to experience and I think I will let my child play this game to experience a solid story about boys meet girl. Don’t be shy and jump from the nest.
