The discourse surrounding The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake is alive and well. I’ve seen both extreme ends of the hype-spectrum, and the memes, GIFs, and reels about pitting the game against the other 2026 titan: Grand Theft Auto VI. Let’s have some fun and discuss which franchise will come out on top.
Many of the reels that slide into my social media algorithm are where Grand Theft Auto VI/Rockstar Games lose confidence as they come head-to-head with the Ocarina of Time remake announcement–more specifically, when it comes to the coveted Game of the Year Award. When it comes to the Game Awards, Nintendo has typically been shoved into Best Family Game categories or any other “pity” categories with the exception of Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which won Game of the Year in 2017. We don’t need a crystal ball to know that Grand Theft Auto VI is a top contender for this year’s GOTY based on winning previous “Most Anticipated Game”.
To level set, Geoff Keighley’s Game Awards, while massive in scope and does a lot for the industry, is not the only awards platform to recognize video games. We also have the BAFTA and DICE awards, and more, and therefore, The Game Awards isn’t the be-all-end-all for determining the best game. Secondly, winning Game of the Year does not equate to a games’ quality or financial success. With that said, I do believe The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time does pose the largest threat to dethroning GTA VI from its almost-guaranteed GOTY award this winter; however, I do not think this will happen. GTA VI will release on several platforms and is a franchise titan because of its ability to appeal to passionate and casual gamers.
This does not bother me though because The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake is monumental in its own right. Even if it doesn’t win Game of the Year, it will be far from a loser (Note: this is all assuming the remake does not bomb and end up being complete garbage, which is highly unlikely). It will be successful as, if not more, than GTA 6 with regards to cultural impact and sales. Whether or not it needed a remake is another story.
Ocarina of Time is one of the most iconic 3D adventure video games that revolutionized the industry, and it also influenced an entire generation of gamers. Next to Mario, Zelda is one of the most recognized Nintendo IP. Another argument is that these two titles are completely the opposite in scope and target audience. Sales will likely not cannibalize one another. People will buy the Ocarina of Time remake either due to nostalgia or curiosity. Lastly, the Zelda franchise has been around since 1986, while GTA has only been around since 1997.
Overall, it’ll be fun to see two epic franchises go “head-to-head”, and I would be interested to see if Nintendo will launch The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in the same month as GTA 6: November. Both titles are important to the industry, and I wish them both success!
