Honkai: Star Rail (HSR) announced in their latest livestream that they will be releasing more characters derived from the Fate series. When this collaboration was first announced, many players were excited. Fate is a of the big and well-beloved series, so to see a collaboration with HSR made many players eager to see how these characters would be incorporated into the game.
The first two characters to arrive were Archer and Saber. Saber is, probably, the most identifiable character in the series, so the bar was high for many players. Unfortunately, these characters did not pan out.
Both Saber and Archer struggled to match, power and skill wise, to other characters in the game. Either their mechanics were pretty straightforward or they weren’t really viable on teams. In a way, there were HSR characters who could meld and mash and then were the Fate characters. Their character kits left many players disappointed.

Now, HoYoverse has announced the arrival of two more characters, Gilgamesh and Rin. Now, if Saber is well beloved, Gilgamesh is held at a similar if not higher level. In fact, HSR has a character named Mydei who seems very inspired by Gilgamesh.

Knowing the reception from players in the first collaboration, I hope HoYoverse will try to do better on these new characters. I don’t really have high hopes though.
A problem with HSR is that it deeply suffers from power creep. Older characters are just not as viable. HoYoverse has been attempting different things to mitigate this, but it’s an ongoing trouble. Furthermore, each planet (or Main Story Arc) comes with its own mechanic such as Super Break, Memosprites, and now Elation. These mechanics synchronize and boost damage as well as do better against certain enemies that hail from that planet.
The problem with Saber and Archer is that they didn’t synchronize with these kinds of teams. They were normal, damage-dealing kind of characters similar to characters released in the first year of the game (who many have fallen out of favor in terms of combat).
I don’t know what to expect from the release of Gilgamesh and Rin. But I don’t see HoYoverse just matching them onto a certain battle mechanic unlike the other two Fate characters just so that they’re more viable on teams. If they do, it’s both good and bad. Great in being able to be viable outside of just being a damage-output character but worse in the fact that they likely won’t synergize well with the other Fate characters which feels out of sorts.
