The topic of an Ocarina of Time remake has been circulated ad nauseum; however, this year was the first time this fantasy became a viable rumor. While this is still far from a proven fact, it at least makes sense to have a more serious conversation about this time around. With a remake of Star Fox 64 releasing later this month, what would we seriously think of and want in a Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake?
First of all, do we even need an Ocarina of Time remake? I don’t think there is a single person out there that is vehemently against one releasing; however, there are many Zelda fans that have expressed that a remake just isn’t necessary. I can understand both sides of this debate. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was revolutionary for its time, not just for Nintendo, but for the gaming industry. It revolutionized 3D action games in a magnitude that we haven’t seen until Breath of the Wild. With that said, despite the outdated graphics, a game of this caliber is still very much playable to this day, and therefore, a remake selling at full price may be unnecessary. An even smaller subset would view this as a lazy money grab. On the other hand, in this era of remakes, this could be the opportunity to expand on one of the greatest titles of all time and make it a lot more palatable for younger gamers to try.
If the rumors come true, what would we want in a remake? Firstly, I will tell you what I wouldn’t want. I wouldn’t want a lazy high-res version of the Nintendo 64 title. I am hoping that isn’t the case or else it would be considered more of a remaster like Metroid Prime. Sure, the polygons are a bit hard to look at nowadays, but a simple glow up just doesn’t justify a $70 or $80 USD price tag.
The low hanging fruit here, outside of graphics, is improved camera controls. In the era of dual analogue, this is an easy update that can improve quality of life significantly. I also feel that an improved menu and U/I system is a given, but one that also would make life much easier. Yes, this includes doing what the 3DS version did and make the Iron Boots an item as well.
From there, I would love additional content. I don’t expect Nintendo to backtrack and provide significant padding; however, an additional cut-scene or two for more context would be amazing. Nintendo is adding more cut-scenes to Star Fox, so why not for Ocarina of Time? It would also be great to have post-game content as the original game ended in a still shot of Link and Zelda. Lastly, adding Master’s Quest as an option would be a fan’s dream.
Lastly, I would love to make one long-shot wish. This would never happen under any circumstances, but it would be pretty incredible if they made DLC where you could play as Sheik. It would be amazing to see what happened during the seven years Link was sealed away in the Temple of Time.
