The Persona series is having a moment.
Persona 4 Revival is on the horizon and Persona 6 is set for the near future, both following up on 2024’s Persona 3 Reload. While all of this is great to see, it’s time for the original games to get some love.
Revelations: Persona released in 1996 on PlayStation and PC while Persona 2: Innocent Sin and Persona 2: Eternal Punishment both released on the PlayStation in 1999 and 2000, respectively. All three games got rereleases on the PlayStation Portable between 2009-12.
The series started to morph into what it is today during Persona 3 in 2006, likely the reason for this game to be the starting point for remakes. That said, the original games shouldn’t be forgotten.
They differ greatly from the modern games, making them a fascinating time capsule into the origins of the series. Furthermore, each game received generally good reviews so while gameplay may be dated, it still has a place.
Unlike the later three entries, the first three Persona games follow are more connected rather than more standalone titles. If a rerelease were to happen, they would have to come together or in sequence.
This means it could look like a collection of games or larger remakes similar to what Persona 3 and 4 have gotten.
A collection of games would allow Atlus to largely keep the games untouched with maybe a few quality of life improvements. It would preserve the original tone and intent of the games but could alienate newer players.
The other option could be a remake project. This could be a lot of fun to see the games take on new life with updated art and combat that aligns them more with modern entries. That said, they could lose their identities that make them so unique.
There is some criticism that remakes tend to brighten the tone of the games. Since the original three seem to be darker, this could turn off fans of the original.
Still, Persona 6 looms and based on the limited marketing we have seen, it could be returning to a tone more like the original three. This could provide a blueprint for how remakes of the first three could go. Time will tell what Persona 6 will eventually look like.
Regardless of how the games look, the original three Persona games need some attention. The series is popular among JRPG fans and has grown significantly since Persona 5‘s release.
Atlus has been celebrating 30 years of Persona, meaning the originals are at least in the conscious of the developer. Once Persona 6 releases, it would be a welcome sight to see these original three return in some form.
