Not too long ago, news broke that Nintendo entered into a deal with Hasbro to develop a toy line for The Legend of Zelda franchise. That statement comes loaded with lots of takes and opinions, and with new images available, I have to wonder if Nintendo should have trusted Hasbro with creating Zelda toys.
Hasbro also released images of these toys, which consist of Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf from The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Link and Zelda will cost $27.99 USD each and Ganondorf will cost $42.99 USD. Pre-orders will go live later today at 8 P.M. EST at Hasbro Pulse. Note though that they aren’t set for release about May 2027.
While this is not the first time Nintendo has unshackled their IPs and lent their licenses to toy makers, Zelda has been a fiercely protected series. It’s an interesting time for a partnership, and it is even more interesting that they went with Tears of the Kingdom characters. They will be approximately 6-inch statues with articulation points.
On one hand, it makes sense as TOTK is the latest Legend of Zelda game. On the other hand, we have two other known major Zelda projects in the pipeline: The Legend of Zelda movie and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake. Some folks questioned why Hasbro didn’t go for the Ocarina of Time stylings of Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf, and I’ll admit, that question crossed my mind as well. Also, toy makers went to town on Mario figures with each Super Mario Bros. movie. These Tears of the Kingdom figures won’t be released until next year, and by then, that game will have been four years old.
Reactions are mixed:
The Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf figures overall look decent in quality and reasonable in price, although I am a little hesitant where Hasbro will take the Zelda series moving forward. Adult collectors buy statues for pride and enjoyment, while “toys” are more associated with intention to play and interact. And yet, I feel that the majority of buyers will be the older, collector crowd. In my honest opinion, I think Hasbro and Nintendo should have focused on a Zelda x Magic the Gathering cards, but that’s just me.
