SYNOPSIS

The world of Coffee Talk expands beyond Seattle as you play as a barista in a late-night cafe in Tokyo, Japan. This is the third game in the series, and it carries over what makes it unique. Coffee Talk Tokyo continues the tradition of crafting coffee, tea, and other beverages while talking with patrons in a visual novel format. Each customer(s) has their own storyline, and often, they intertwine with one another. It tackles themes such as finding one’s purpose, closing generational gaps, medical ethics, bullying, and gender roles. Although it is the third game in the series, Coffee Talk Tokyo is built for any player to hop right in!

ANALYSIS

Game Play

For the uninitiated, Coffee Talk Tokyo continues with the same game play mechanics as the last two titles in the series. Its foundation is built as a visual novel, where you spend most of your time progressing through dialogue between you and your cafe patrons. While you don’t really have dialogue options, you are tasked with taking their orders and creating the perfect drink, which then can provide varied results. Sometimes the customer knows exactly what their want, while many times they provide you with hints or a specific flavor profile.

When making a drink, you select up to three ingredients that build upon one another: a base, primary, and secondary. The combinations will alter the available flavor profiles: warm, cool, sweet, and bitter. As you progress in the game, various ingredients will be made available such as fruit (mango, lychee) and dairy (ice cream, whipped cream). In some instances, you can further customize drinks with latte art. One new feature in Coffee Talk Tokyo is the ability to make both cold and hot drinks. The level of accuracy of delivery the correct drink order influences whether you obtain the best ending or each character or not.

Coffee Talk Tokyo breaks the game down by shift, and each shift comes with new conversations and new drink orders. As you get to know your patrons, you can unlock more about them when exploring Tomodachill, the games’ fictional social media platform. You can “like” their posts and find important clues as well! There is a total of 15 nights to play through, and you meet 11 characters, many of which are inspired by Japanese mythology and folklore.

Character and Story

The compelling story lines and diverse cast of characters have become the hallmark of the Coffee Talk series. While the first two are tied closely together with returning patrons, Tokyo has taken a risk and introduced a new roster (except for one character). These patrons are a mix of human and non-human, such as Makoto the Nopperabo, Ayame the Restless Spirit, Kenji the Kappa, and Jun a River Dragon. Each have well developed personalities and interact with one another seamlessly.

Each character also serves some narrative purpose in Coffee Talk Tokyo. As mentioned above, several relatable themes are discussed in depth. For example, we meet a family with non-traditional roles. Ash and Emi are parents to Emily, and Ash is a stay-at-home dad. They face several challenges as a family including the scrutiny of a father embracing what society has generally considered a “mother’s job”. As the game progresses, their stories expand and intermingle with others. For example, this same family also struggles with Emily’s recent behavior. When you get Emily to open up about fitting in and bullying in school, a restaurant owner Yuki, takes her under her wing.

Another example of intermingling storylines includes the recently retired Kenji, who clashes with a much younger coworker, Makoto, looking for business advice. With the added backstory that Kappas and Dragons don’t get along, we see the tumultuous and complex interaction unfold between Keni and Jun as well.

It took a few shifts to realize the stakes and fully draw you into these customers’ lives, but it was worth the wait. Overall, mileage may vary on the impact of their stories; however, they are objectively well thought out and executed in-game.

Graphics and Sound

Like with game play, the graphics and sound are similar to previous Coffee Talk games. The art style is pleasing to the eye and quite colorful, capturing the essence of a bustling Tokyo. More importantly, amazing lo-fi music plays along in the background. Andrew “AJ” Jeremy, who composed the last two Coffee Talk games, returns to design the soundtrack, which can be customized during the playthrough.

FINAL SCORE

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Overall, Coffee Talk Tokyo takes a successful indie formula and delivers yet another cozy narrative-driven game. Many things about Coffee Talk Tokyo are familiar, but new characters, new stories, and tweaks to the drink-making experience is refreshing. To those that are familiar with the Coffee Talk games, it is understandable that some may feel like something is missing in Tokyo, especially when the first two titles had several returning (and favorite) characters.

Coffee Talk Tokyo felt like it had a slower build up, and it took me longer to become invested. And as someone who has been playing the series to date, I felt a mild tonal shift that was difficult to put a finger on. Regardless, Coffee Talk Tokyo is a most welcome title for anyone who enjoys cozy games, unique characters, lo-fi music, and meaningful themes. It was enjoyable to play and did not overstay its welcome. If anything, I wouldn’t have minded a few more shifts!
