DEMO REVIEW: Ardenfall

5–8 minutes

Title: Ardenfall (demo)
Developer: Spellcast Studios
Publisher: Spellcast Studios
Release Date: 2026
Platform: PC
Reviewed on: Steam

Ardenfall is a self-described, “compact open world RPG, where your decisions truly matter, ” and it doesn’t mess around.

Ardenfall is a low-poly game and the first release from Spellcast Studios, who have been in development for a while, taking inspiration from games like The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind and many others. The studio promises a lot — from dungeons to killable NPCs. As a longtime RPG fan, I decided to give the game a shot. With 80,000 wishlists on Steam, it has expectations to meet. Unfortunately, they only sent their standard public vertical slice demo, so there was no new gameplay to preview. For this review, I’ll look at four areas that cover most players’ expectations: the promises made, art, design, and gameplay.

Promises

As a developer myself, I know how difficult it is to make a demo — especially for an open world game. The issues are many, but Ardenfall promises a lot. You can judge a developer by how well they keep their word and listen to their fans, and there’s enough content here that most studios would call it a decent ten-hour game and be done with it. Spellcast Studios says no; this is just their demo.

I can confirm that everything listed in their demo is actually present. Having played through the demo a couple of times, I can honestly say they delivered. There’s a solid range of spells and ways to approach quests. My first playthrough went sideways as a mage — I accidentally killed the entire starting town because I was in a rush. I did loot everything on the way out, but with the main shop gone, it was kind of pointless. My second playthrough, as a melee build, I saved everyone.

Art

I generally prefer stylized games — cell-shading especially, but as long as a game has its own unique identity, it can hold up over time. Low poly isn’t for everyone. It’s simple, and when optimized correctly, it makes a massive open world accessible even on modest hardware. PS1/EverQuest-era graphics in 2026 is something my phone can handle, at least graphically. So visual scalability is fine, the atmosphere of each area is unique and interesting, both visually and from an audio perspective. Yet, I honestly don’t think the corpses of my enemies floating away was a design choice, however funny it was at times.

The trade-off is that low-poly graphics can also look unpolished, dated, and without the right lighting — extremely hard to see, which is the case in several areas of the demo. Character designs range from exciting to bizarre. The customization menu, limited to humanoids, is decent but not extensive. Monsters range from flying whale-sized fish to bubble-shooting tuba monsters called Hollow Horns, plus their own version of Octoroks. The world feels alien and interesting, though modern casual players may find it hard to navigate given the sparse quest markers and unclear paths.

Design

“Design” is a loaded word in game development — it covers everything from the magic system to menus to level layout. Ardenfall doesn’t hold your hand. You get a few tips (like how to dodge), but there’s no real tutorial — and honestly, it’s a mixed bag. The modern clutter of constant quest markers and reminders is gone, leaving a relatively clean and neat UI for the player. A lot of modern games enjoy unneeded hand-holding even for the simplest tasks. In Ardenfall, if you need help with a quest, you read the journal, your map, and your logs. True, you look like a complete nerd in-game while doing so, but who cares — it’s immersive. How long that lasts before it becomes more of a chore than something interesting is a real question.

The magic system runs on items — tablets, scrolls, and staffs rather than memorized spells, which limits your options unless you’re willing to dedicate a chunk of your inventory to them. Thankfully, the inventory system itself is simple and intuitive. This item-based approach does create an imbalance, though: magic combat feels more impactful than melee. Some of that comes down to visual effects, some to audio design — in terms of raw damage output the two are fairly balanced, but magic edges out melee through sheer versatility. It’s hard to argue otherwise when the choice is “swing a sword hard” versus “summon monsters, shield yourself, and throw fireballs”. Honestly, a spellblade build is what I would prefer, leveraging the benefits of both — maybe next time. Sure, you get less damage per point invested in skills, but in some fights it’s easier to swing a sword than cycle through five different spells.

Level and world design encourage exploration and reward finding hidden areas. That said, since this is a very limited demo, a lot of the open world is locked behind the full release, and much of what’s here is fairly on-rails. A large chunk of the demo’s map is ocean — empty, with a visible mist wall marking the edge.

Gameplay

Beyond the melee-versus-magic balance issues, this demo packs in a surprising amount of gameplay: platforming, environmental buffs and effects, stealth, and more. Ardenfall tries to make each of these mechanics feel meaningful and distinct, and to its credit, it mostly succeeds.

In most games, I’m a hoarder — I will usually die before touching a potion I picked up in the tutorial. It’s stupid, and I know it. In Ardenfall, I was constantly digging through potions and scrolls, checking durability, even opening my character tab to figure out that the “dirty” condition was costing me a point of charisma. I mean, it made sense — I wouldn’t want to talk to a sweaty guy caked in gore. The world reacts to player choices in small but real ways too, from wearing a backpack to razing a village.

On the downside, enemy AI is fairly simplistic — I could hop onto a rock and pick off even the toughest enemies from range with zero risk. This points to underlying AI or navigation issues, possibly with the navmesh. It’s fun to outsmart us game devs once or twice — it always is — but it gets old quick. There are plenty of issues beyond bugs too, of which there are more than a few, including crashes roughly twice an hour in my playthroughs. I could never figure out a definite cause, even after playing on two separate computers. I know it wasn’t my antivirus deleting game files this time, so it’s something to keep in mind.

Final Score (3 Out of 5 Stars)

Rating: 3 out of 5.

As a developer, I try to be exacting when I judge games. On my scale, 2.5 stars is average, 4 stars is a great game (Mass Effect series), and 5 stars is reserved for games that genuinely break the mold (The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time in 1998). Ardenfall is an above-average RPG that I’d recommend depending on its price. It’s a genuine love letter to classic RPGs, and that also makes it a polarizing one: players will likely either love it or hate it. Visually, it’s interesting, if sometimes off-putting, rather than beautiful. The design and gameplay show that Spellcast Studios genuinely cares about the project rather than simply trying to make a quick buck. They invested time and work into the world, it shows.

Ardenfall has heart. It also feels rough and buggy, particularly when it comes to stability. I can’t judge what I haven’t seen, so based on the demo: if it releases at $20–$25 and the crashing issue is fixed, I can comfortably recommend picking it up.
