The Zelda 40th Direct: Nintendo presented a 30-minute 40th Zelda Anniversary Direct that took place Tuesday, September 8th at 7 A.M. PST. Fans have waited eagerly with excitement and a little trepidation. There were a few announcements and updates, and yet, some fans including myself felt there just could’ve been more. What were your personal impressions of the Zelda 40th Direct?

To be fair, my reaction was muted primarily due to exhaustion. I just spent four days covering PAX West in Seattle, and this Direct was nice and early on PST. Overall, I was grateful and excited that Nintendo finally acknowledged the Zelda franchise’s huge milestone. But let met first start off with what I was disappointed by:

No Trailer, Really?

One of the first announcements wasn’t much of an announcement. Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed the title of the Legend of Zelda movie as “The Legend of Zelda“. This comes to zero surprise. He did leave some breadcrumbs, stating that it would be an original story and the Triforce may be involved. However, I was sorely disappointed that there was no trailer and no further acknowledgement on casting. The move is releasing in about eight months, and we haven’t even witnessed a teaser trailer. Nintendo seems to be leaning hard on providing updates on the movie with the Nintendo Today! app.

No…Other Games?

I wasn’t expecting information on the next 3D mainline Zelda game. I mean, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is, and should be, the primary focus. However, part of me hoped for a sneak peek at the next port or 2D game like Twilight Princess or the 3D titles.

Okay, before you peg me for a negative Nancy, those were really my only pangs of disappointment. As a hard core Zelda fan, it almost seems like I am set up to be disappointed in some way because of how high I put the franchise on the pedestal. Now, onto the positives:

They Gave Us More than Games

I am over the moon that Nintendo will update their Museum to commemorate The Legend of Zelda franchise. I visited Japan when it was celebrating Mario’s 40th, and I vow to return to check out how the exhibit will evolve. I also am excited for the return of a concert series. As a Symphony of the Goddess fan, I am here for the iconic Zelda music.

We also got some new hardware and accessories like a new Legend of Zelda themed Switch 2 and Pro Controller, LEGO set, and Ocarina of Time amiibo.

Deep Dive into Ocarina of Time

Last, but certainly not least, we have the deeper dive into The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. We got an epic new trailer, but more importantly, Eiji Aeonuma walked us through some of the game. The visuals were breathtaking, and it was neat to see what gameplay changes were made. It’s clear that Nintendo is sincere in reaching out to both older and newer generations of fans.
