BERRY BERRY BERRY. MONEY MONEY MONEY. BURY BURY BURY.
In a game that makes little sense from afar, Berry Bury Berry makes ALL the sense once you give in to the irresistible call to throw fruit down a hole in exchange for money. Berry Bury Berry is a first-person incremental game where you gain berry-buddies, earn money by throwing fruit down a hole, and expand with new upgrades. It’s simply genius, and yet, as you tear down walls (literally and figuratively), you learn there is a little unnerving history behind it all.

SYNOPSIS
Berry Bury Berry is a game that exists on two levels. On the surface, it is an addicting game with no clear and apparent plot. The premise is simple: throw fruit down a hole, grow the hole, and get rich! You can expand your world and earn upgrades. Then, at the end of every night, the room shuts down, and you must head to bed under an ever-watchful eye of a piggy bank.
The second layer reveals itself when you stumble upon, and solve, various puzzles scattered throughout this surreal “garden”. Each puzzle solved lands you a cassette tape of sound bites that explains why something just…feels off once the thrill of instant riches wears off. These secrets are worth finding out, so there will be no story spoilers here.
Analysis
Gameplay
The controls are simple. You move, pick up berries, and drop of toss them while the sun is still shining. At the start of the game, blueberries are your only fruit, and they grow from a simple, flowering plant. There are also stars that float in the air, and when you pop and collect enough of them, you can evolve berry buddies—sentient beings that also produce fruit. Berry buddies also begin with producing only blueberries, but those stars can transform them into higher earning fruits: raspberries, strawberries, grapes, kiwis, bananas, pears, peaches, watermelons, and pumpkins. One day, you’re earning five to ten dollars, then you leapfrog to hundreds and even thousands of dollars.
Other upgrades make earning money easier: you can vacuum multiple berries and launch them into the hole, direct the hole to move around the room, multiply growth of berries through Berry Blitz (and later, smoothies via…chainsaw?), and launch everything with the Berry Fountain. One of my favorite upgrades are extending the length of each day and auto-pick up, which basically acts like a magnet, so you don’t have to manually pick up your money.
The more money you earn, the more upgrades you can purchase, and this loop has proven addicting. There is also a point where you can pay to start over while keeping certain upgrades. The pacing of each day, the variety of upgrades, and the ever-so-off-putting environment makes leaves little room for boredom.
Overall, the game controls smoothly. I played on my Switch 2 with my Joy-cons. It was a little tough at first to pick up berries with desired accuracy, but the vacuum ability took care of that quickly. I do believe use of a mouse may be the optimal method; however, use of controller worked out fine. Also, despite how well the Switch 2 has proven itself to date, when I triggered hundreds of berries and launched them everywhere, the game did lag a few times. While this did not bother me, it is worth noting that this experience will vary depending on what platform you play on.
Art Style and Sound
There is something bright, colorful, and bouncy about Berry Burry Berry that contrasts greatly with the underlying creepiness of the game. From the smiling sun to the also smiling star-headed figure, there’s something childlike about the environment. It almost looks like a set from a kid’s show. The berry buddies also are quite adorable and make the funniest noises when you bump into them. But don’t worry, right when you’re lulled into a false sense of security, night falls, and a floating piggy bank watches over you until you go to bed for the night. Then, the screen warps to that of a VHS analogue tape, and you wonder…what is actually going on here? The music and sound design also matches that of the playful graphics. It is also childlike and “fun”.
FINAL SCORE:
Berry Bury Berry earns a full five stars from me because of its brilliant design—simple yet effective. It scratches that casual game itch, but it also has layers buried (pun intended) beneath the surface, ripe (pun still intended) for discovery. You can play as little or as much as you’d like, with a plethora of upgrades to help you inch toward virtual riches.
The theming is also a delight. The innocent child-like environment is misleading, and the contrast that occurs when the day ends can make even the most fearless gamer feel uncomfortable. Berry Bury Bery is a lot of fun and well made. I recommend it to just about anyone, and a console release is greatly welcome! So, keep earning that money…
