While I played the demo, I got to speak with Dustin, one of the developers. Super Cucumber has been in development one and off since 2014, and the idea sprung from a love for classic 2D platformers, fighting games, and 16-bit classics. With over 100 levels, there are tons of challenges and secrets to uncover. Also, Super Cucumber has full controller and native Steam Deck support.
I played the demo for Super Cucumber, created by a husband-and-wife dev team. I was a little nervous at first given the fact that I’m not the best at precision platformers; however, the tutorial stage was thorough yet brief, and when I died, the consequences weren’t too punishing. The way the dev described building the difficult levels, it was easy to see that Super Cucumber is a shining example of easy to learn, difficult to master. It’s a game that amateurs like me can cut their teeth with and still have fun while speed runners lock-in with sicko mode. And of course, the visuals are adorable, and the game was overall a joy to play. I look forward to playing the final product sometime next year.
